In a country like South Africa we can spend as much time outside our homes as much in them, and that interface becomes important. As building costs continue to increase, maximising usable space becomes very important, and the marriage between inside and outside can create the impression of a much larger space.

Walking the site, to absorb the interplay between the ground it stands on, the view and vegetation is crucial. All our lodges have come from this observance, and what the site tells me. A respectful, light touch with this interplay of the dynamics of soil, bush, and recycling precious water resources informs my process from the earliest conceptions.
