The Royal Alfred Marina in Port Alfred is quite a unique long-standing setting. It encompasses a couple of island with canals linkages in between.
This property is located in the landside area facing both canal and sea. The houses normally all face forward to the canal side, but we felt the need to introduce views both sides. A small 13-meter frontage made it quite challenging, thus we located all the bedrooms on the top floor, three kids bedrooms facing the canal and the main bedroom facing the sea.
All the living areas were situated on the bottom two floors spilling out onto the canal side. Simplistic effective layouts was the order of the day, with contemporary dressings externally.
The entrance lobby was designed around a three-storey steel and timber floating staircase connecting all three floors. The stair became a sculptural feature as one entered the house, with natural light streaming in from the top and sides.
